Introducing the New Volkswagen Transporter: A Friendly Face with More Space
The brand-new T7 Transporter from Volkswagen, with a variety of diesel, plug-in hybrid, and pure-electric power options.
After months of sneak peeks and teaser info, the all-new Volkswagen Transporter has finally been unveiled. This latest version of VW's popular medium panel van is also the sibling of the top-selling Ford Transit Custom.
Known as the T7 VW Transporter, it comes as a panel van in two different body lengths and heights. The standard model measures 5,050mm in length with a 3,100mm wheelbase, which is 146mm longer and 97mm more in wheelbase compared to its predecessor. The standard roof height remains under two metres, allowing easy access to multi-storey car parks.
Volkswagen has expanded the maximum width between the internal wheel housings by 148mm to 1,392mm, accommodating Euro pallets better. The standard wheelbase Transporter now has a maximum load length of 2,602mm.
The basic Transporter offers 5.8 cubic metres of load space. For those needing more, the extended wheelbase and high-roof versions provide up to nine cubic metres of cargo space, with a maximum load length of 3,002mm.
In addition to the traditional panel van, the new Transporter is available as a Kombi with two rows of seats, a double cab 'dropside', and a nine-seater Shuttle, known as the Caravelle in other markets. There's also a rugged PanAmericana version, featuring black wheel arch cladding and bumpers, exclusive fabric seats, and 19-inch alloy wheels as standard.
Inside, the new Transporter includes a 12-inch fully digital instrument panel and a 13-inch central touchscreen, both standard across the range. Other standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, keyless start, and various safety systems such as lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and traffic sign recognition.
Smaller cabin details include the traditional handbrake lever being replaced with a dashboard switch, and the automatic gear selector relocated to the steering column, freeing up space for a larger central storage cubby.
Diesel, Plug-in Hybrid, and All-Electric Volkswagen eTransporter
The new VW Transporter offers three diesel engine options, delivering 109bhp, 147bhp, or 168bhp, with all-wheel drive available on the two more powerful versions. Next in line is the plug-in hybrid, or eHybrid, producing 229bhp.
The most exciting news is the debut of the pure-electric VW eTransporter. Three versions are available, generating 134bhp, 215bhp, and 282bhp. All use a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, powered by a 64kWh battery that should offer around 200 miles of range per charge.
We'll learn more about the new Volkswagen Transporter and eTransporter in September when they make their public debut. The first units are expected to arrive in the UK in 2025.
